Blood transfusion service in Poland in 2021

Background: The aim of this study was to present the basic aspects activity Polish transfusion blood service (hereinafter referred as Centers) in 2021, taking into account conditions related ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: Analysis data forwarded Institute by Blood Transfusion Centers (Centers). Results: In there were 23 136 local collection sites opeerating Poland. components also collected during 11 150 mobile collections. overall numer donors estimated at 615 784, majority which non-remunerated (615 425, including 40 059 responders donation appeals) well 45 remunerated 313 autologous donors. Most frequent whole collections (1 248 585 donations), least — granulocyte concentrate (104 donations) RBC apheresis (26 donations). Whole mostly (49.01%), less frequently (31%) (19.99%). most prepared RBCs 231 538 units) FFP 425 640 units). convalescent plasma (87 071 units altogether). a total 85 677 PCs pooled from 52 346 prepared. Additional processing methods (leukocyte depletion, irradiation) more applied (49.57% leukodepleted, 50.43% both leuko-depleted irradiated), than (20.61% leukodepleted , 10.05% irradiated, 0.04% irradiated). Pathogen reaction technologies 15.64% issued for clinical use 12.53% PCs. For various reasons following amounts wasted 2021: 12 403 blood, 32 866 RBCs, 55 058 FFP, 1598 PCs, 5317 1506 cryoprecipitate. As compared previous year, 2021 almost all indicators Poland have increased. Conclusions: point smaller impact pandemic on year 2020. may serve starting analysis issues organizational service. outcome contribute practical benchmarking, comparing experiences seeking new solutions.
